Lawrence has expressed that she believes it's no longer suitable to speak out against the Trump presidency, concerned it could intensify unhelpful debate and deepen rifts across the nation.

‘I Question the Usefulness’, Says Lawrence

During a discussion, Lawrence shared, “When Trump was first in office, I felt like I was running around without clear direction. But as we’ve learned, through repeated campaigns, celebrities do not make a difference whatsoever on electoral choices.”

The actor went on, “So then what am I doing? I’m just voicing my thoughts on an issue that’s going to heighten conflict tearing the nation apart.”

Political Evolution

Lawrence has previously been open about supporting right and leftwing presidential nominees throughout her life. Growing up with Republican parents in Kentucky, she supported the Republican nominee in the 2008 election then moving to the Democrats and explaining she understood during President Obama’s term that voting Republican was undermining her personal freedoms as a woman.

Past Statements

In 2015, she remarked that Trump winning the presidency could represent “the end of the world” and publicly supported Joe Biden in the 2020 election. More recently, she lent her support to Vice President Harris, “because I feel she’s an excellent choice and I know that she will do whatever she can to protect abortion access.”

Hollywood’s Stance

Jennifer Lawrence was joined by most of Hollywood in her rejection of Donald Trump as a presidential contender, but the minimal impact stars have over the public choices was highlighted by his election win.

“The second term feels different,” commented the actress about his leadership. “Because he said what he was going to do. We were aware of his actions for the previous administration. He was transparent. And that’s what we chose.”

Latest Film

Lawrence is discussing her new film, director Lynne Ramsay’s project in which she plays a new mother who struggles with her mental health in rural Montana. At a press conference for the project in Venice, she spoke about Israel’s bombings in Gaza: “I’m terrified. It’s horrifying. What’s occurring is nothing short of a genocide and it’s horrible.”

Wider Issues

She continued by saying that she was disappointed by “the disrespect in the discussions of American politics right now and how that is going to be accepted to the kids today. It’s going to be normal to them that elected officials deceive.”

She aimed to shift frustration about the conflict to decision-makers rather than entertainers. “Stay focused on the people in charge,” she said, in what many took to be a reference to the declaration supported by more than 4,000 entertainment industry figures to boycott certain cultural organizations.

Relatable Experiences

Lawrence, who earned critical acclaim aged 22 for her part in Silver Linings Playbook, is receiving praise for her portrayal in the new film. While Ramsay has disputed the plot being understood as one of maternal mental health issues and psychological distress, Lawrence said that she identified with parts of her film narrative after the birth of her youngest child, soon after shooting ended.

“It was fear about my child,” she said, “just picturing every potential danger, and then second-guessing everything that I was doing. I was seeing a therapist, but I began using a medication called Zurzuvae and I took it for a short period and it was effective.”

Professional Experiences

The actor also mentioned of the liberating necessity of shooting revealing sequences in the project while she was in pregnancy and limited physically.

“It’s refreshing,” she said, regarding the need to cast off vanity. “I mean, I occasionally wonder where I’m like, What separates me between my work and that profession? But it doesn’t trouble me deeply.”
